Beige is the colour most people actually want when they open a white screen to light their face. A monitor showing pure white throws light close to daylight, around 6500 K on most panels, and that renders skin cooler and flatter than almost anyone likes. Beige is the same light, warmed.
The video call light
Placed behind and slightly above a webcam, a beige field does three things at once: it fills the shadows under the eyes and nose, it softens them because the source is large, and it warms the result so the picture does not look clinical. It is close enough to neutral that the rest of the frame stays believable, which is the difference between this and a saturated colour like orange.
Practical notes: get the screen as close to the camera axis as you can, keep it above eye level so the shadows fall downwards, and do not run it at full brightness , you want fill, not a spotlight. If your room light is warm tungsten rather than daylight, warm the value further in the colour box so the two sources agree.
A warm neutral background
Beige also works where white is too stark: as a background behind pale objects, as a page like field for reading, or as a screen left running in a room where a white rectangle would dominate. It reads as paper rather than as a light.

Beige screen questions
Why is beige better than white for a video call?
Because most displays produce white close to daylight, which makes skin look cool and slightly grey on camera. Beige warms that light without tinting the whole frame. It is the same reasoning behind warm white bulbs and gold reflectors.
How do I match my room lighting?
Type values into the colour box and watch yourself in the camera preview. If the room is lit by warm tungsten lamps, push the screen warmer so the two sources agree; if you are sitting near a window, stay closer to neutral.
Is a beige screen bright enough to be useful?
Usually, in a room that already has some light. It is only slightly below white in output. In a dark room, or against a bright window behind you, no screen will be enough , that is when a real light is the answer.
