Mac OS X Desktop

A browser recreation of a Mac OS X desktop with a dock, full screen. Not affiliated with Apple, and none of the icons do anything.

Some simulations contain motion or changing brightness. If flashing or moving imagery can affect you, do not start the effect and use your system reduced motion setting where available.

The Mac desktop is unusually easy to recognise from across a room , the menu bar along the top, the dock along the bottom, and a great deal of empty space in between. That silhouette is what this page recreates.

What it simulates

A macOS desktop: menu bar, dock with application icons, and a gradient background. Drawn with HTML and CSS, with nothing behind it.

Where it works

How to run it

  1. Press Start fullscreen.
  2. Press Esc or tap Exit to return.

What it cannot do

No icon opens, no menu drops down and no application runs. It is not an emulator, it does not run macOS software, and it changes nothing on the machine displaying it. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple.

Fake Mac Error for the failure state, Windows 10 Desktop and Ubuntu Desktop for other platforms.

Mac OS X desktop questions

Can I run Mac apps on this?

No. It is a drawing of a desktop, not an emulator or a virtual machine. Nothing on it is interactive.

Is this what current macOS looks like?

Broadly, in layout. The menu bar and dock have stayed in place across many releases even as the styling has changed considerably, which is why the silhouette is still instantly recognisable.
