Blue Screen of Death

A full screen imitation of the Windows stop error, animated and harmless. Nothing is installed and nothing changes on the device , Esc closes it instantly.

Exit with Esc
Some simulations contain motion or changing brightness. If flashing or moving imagery can affect you, do not start the effect and use your system reduced motion setting where available.

The blue stop screen has been shorthand for “something went badly wrong” since the early 1990s, which is exactly why a convincing full screen version of it gets a reaction. This page draws one in the browser. It does not crash anything, and it never touches the machine it is running on.

What it simulates

A Windows stop error: the solid blue field, the apologetic message, a progress figure that climbs, and a technical stop code at the bottom. It is a picture of that screen, drawn with HTML and CSS.

A detail worth knowing if you want the joke to land: on current Windows 11 the crash screen is no longer blue. Microsoft announced in 2025 that the unexpected restart screen would move to a black background, dropping the frowning face and the QR code in favour of the stop code and the faulting driver. So this simulation is now a period piece , instantly recognisable to anyone who used Windows in the last thirty years, and slightly dated to anyone whose only reference is a brand new machine. The Microsoft boot screen is closer to what a modern Windows failure looks like.

How to run it

  1. Press Start fullscreen. The screen fills and the browser interface disappears.
  2. Move the mouse away, or set the device down. Any on screen controls fade out after a few idle seconds.
  3. Press Esc at any time to stop it, or tap Exit in the corner.
  4. On iPhone and iPad, browsers do not grant true fullscreen the same way desktop browsers do, so the page uses a full screen overlay instead. It looks and exits the same way.

Keeping it a joke

A convincing crash screen is funny for about ten seconds and then it is just stressful. Do not run it on a machine somebody is working on, during an exam or a deadline, on a shared or work computer, or on anyone who will genuinely believe they have lost their work. Never on a device you do not have permission to use. If in doubt, stay in the room and end it quickly.

What it cannot do

Fake Windows Update for the slow progress version, Microsoft boot screen for a modern looking failure, Fake Mac Error for the other platform. For the plain colour rather than the error, see the blue screen page.

Blue screen of death questions

Is this a real blue screen of death?

No. It is a web page drawing a picture of one. Your computer is running normally the entire time, and pressing Escape returns you to the browser.

Will it harm my computer?

No. This page does not attempt to crash, restart, alter settings or install software. Closing the tab ends the simulation.

Why is the real one black now?

Microsoft announced in 2025 that Windows 11 would replace the blue crash screen with a black one, showing the stop code and the faulting driver rather than the frowning face and QR code. The name stuck even though the colour did not.

Can I make the stop code say something specific?

Not on this page , the text is fixed. It is designed to be recognisable at a glance rather than configurable.
